Day 6 – 30 in 30 Challenge – Meet Ms Grackle

When people find out that I am not only an artist, but also a birder, they ask what birds I’ve seen other than the usual pigeon or house finch. And sometimes they ask me what my favorite bird is and they are surprised when I say the Great Tailed Grackle. They are my favorite because they have attitude. Case in point, my sweetie and I were eating lunch at some outside tables at a restaurant in Boulder City, NV and there were a half a dozen grackles hopping around our feet and chairs, making all kinds of ruckus, demanding to know when we were going to drop some food for them. If you’ve ever heard a grackle stating his opinion, up close and personal, you know they can be quite loud and obnoxious. And they are fearless and that is why I like them.

I saw and photographed this female grackle as she was jumping around in the grass at a local park, looking for tasty crawly things.

  1. Dave, this painting is wonderful! As soon as I saw this, I could tell it was painted with the heart. I didn't know you were a birder, but it really shows in your work. Happy New Year!
